About Heritage Paving
Block Paving
Specialists Since 2014
Block paving is not just for driveways. As a patio surface, it offers something that porcelain and natural stone cannot: unlimited creative freedom, exceptional drainage between the blocks, and the practical advantage that any damaged block can be lifted and replaced without disturbing the rest.
At Heritage Paving we design and install block paved patios that work specifically as outdoor living spaces. Patio block paving is specified differently from driveway block paving, with more freedom for decorative elements, gentler curves, integrated planting pockets and feature patterns that would be impractical on a driveway.
We bring physical blocks and colour samples to your garden before any order is placed. Seeing the actual block in your specific outdoor light and against your planting and house materials is the only reliable way to make a confident choice.

Patterns and Designs
Block Patio Patterns That
Transform Your Garden
Block paving offers more laying pattern options than any other patio material. We bring physical samples of each to your home before you decide.
Herringbone
The most structurally sound pattern and the most popular choice for patios. The interlocking 45 or 90 degree arrangement locks blocks together and works beautifully with a contrasting border course for maximum garden impact.
Stretcher Bond
A clean, contemporary staggered pattern that suits modern properties and pairs beautifully with large format blocks or two-tone colour combinations. Simpler to cut than herringbone and ideal for irregular patio shapes.
Basketweave
A traditional woven pattern that suits period properties. Pairs of blocks set at alternating angles create a decorative, tactile surface with excellent visual character. Particularly popular for cottage garden patios.
Feature Circle
A decorative centrepiece circle in a contrasting colour is the most striking upgrade available for any patio. Fan-laid blocks radiate from a central block outwards, creating a focal point that transforms an ordinary patio into a genuine design feature.
Random / Sett Pattern
Tumbled block setts in a random organic layout evoke traditional cobbled courtyards and are ideal for character properties. Available in Tobermore Tegula tumbled blocks for the most authentic aged appearance.
Stack Bond with Border
A precise grid layout in the main field with a contrasting colour border course creates a bold, structured patio that suits architectural gardens and contemporary homes. Often combined with a feature circle for maximum design impact.
Mix patterns for the best result. The most impressive block paved patios combine a herringbone or stretcher bond main field with a contrasting border course and a feature circle focal point. We design all three elements together during your free site visit and bring physical samples so you can see exactly how the finished result will look.
Colours and Finishes
A Colour for
Every Garden Style
Block paving for patios is available in a broad range of colours, with the same choice between concrete and clay blocks. For patios there is often more freedom to be adventurous, feature circle in a contrasting colour, a border course in a complementary tone, or a two-colour field pattern can all be considered without the structural constraints of a trafficked driveway surface.
Popular patio choices include warm buff and natural tones that blend into garden settings, charcoal and graphite for a contemporary outdoor room feel, and clay reds and terracottas for period gardens and traditional properties. Tumbled block options from Tobermore add an aged, cobbled character suited to cottage and rural gardens.
The only reliable way to choose is to see physical blocks against your own garden and house. We bring samples to your free consultation so you can make a confident decision before anything is ordered.

How We Work
Your New Block Paving Patio
in 6 Steps
Every Heritage block paved patio follows the same rigorous process. The steps that determine whether a patio lasts 5 years or 50 happen below the surface, and we never rush them.

We visit your property with physical block and colour samples. We discuss patterns, border options, feature elements and garden integration ideas. We take measurements, assess drainage, DPC clearance and any groundworks requirements before providing a quote.

02
Fixed-Price Quotation
A detailed written quote covering materials, specifications, block type, pattern layout and timeline. No hidden extras. The price you are quoted is the price you pay.
No surprises, ever
03
Excavation & Sub-Base
We excavate to correct depth, remove all spoil and install a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base to the correct thickness and drainage falls. For patios this is typically 75 to 100mm of compacted MOT, properly levelled with falls running away from the building.
Machine compacted throughout
04
Edging, Steps and Features
Concrete-haunched edging blocks are installed to all perimeters. Any steps, raised sections, drainage channels, feature circle prep or planting pockets are constructed at this stage, before the main block laying begins.
All features integrated from the start
05
Sand Bedding and Block Laying
A sharp sand bedding layer is screeded to precise levels. Blocks are laid in the chosen pattern using a wet saw for all perimeter cuts. Feature circles, contrasting borders and any header courses are integrated as we lay. Every block is consistent in height, and every joint is aligned.
Precision throughout
06
Compaction, Jointing & Sealing
The surface is plate-compacted to lock blocks together into the bedding sand. Kiln-dried sand is brushed into all joints, and the surface is re-vibrated. A professional weed-inhibiting block sealant is applied. Full site clean-down and walkthrough before we leave.
